• Termination of the SDS Program

The Student Direct Stream (SDS), which offers quicker visa processing, has been discontinued. Regular processing now takes 8-12 weeks, compared to the SDS timeline of 5-20 days. The application timeline becomes a bit longer , hence, start your application at least 6 months in advance to account for offer letters, tuition fee payments, medical exams, and visa processing.

• Increased Part-Time Work Opportunities

Managing finances as an international student just got easier! The work hour limit has been increased from 20 hours a week to 24 hours a week.  There has also been an increase in the availability of part time jobs. Ontario offers more part-time jobs in skilled labor, while opportunities in petrol stations and fast-food restaurants like McDonald’s are limited. So, don’t be shy to explore rewarding roles that align with your skills and long-term goals!

• Changes to Post-Graduation Work Permits (PGWP)

Graduates must complete skilled programs in areas like Agriculture, Healthcare, STEM, Trade, or Transport in order to be eligible for PGWP. Additional requirements for PGWP now include language proficiency skills and graduation from an eligible field of study. Remember that you can still get student visas to pursue any courses, but can only work in Canada after graduation if you choose the PGWP-eligible courses.

• Plan Early: Start your application process 6 months ahead to avoid delays.

• Be Patient: While processing might take longer without SDS, your visa will still be processed.
