Are you planning to study in Canada? Does the recent updates to Canada’s student visa and post-graduation work permit (PGWP) policies seem overwhelming? We assure you there’s no need to worry! With the right preparation and understanding, Canada continues to offer incredible opportunities for international students to pursue their dreams. Here’s what you need to know about these changes:
-
Termination of the SDS Program
The Student Direct Stream (SDS), which offers quicker visa processing, has been discontinued. Regular processing now takes 8-12 weeks, compared to the SDS timeline of 5-20 days. The application timeline becomes a bit longer , hence, start your application at least 6 months in advance to account for offer letters, tuition fee payments, medical exams, and visa processing.
- Increased Part-Time Work Opportunities
Managing finances as an international student just got easier! The work hour limit has been increased from 20 hours a week to 24 hours a week. There has also been an increase in the availability of part time jobs. Ontario offers more part-time jobs in skilled labor, while opportunities in petrol stations and fast-food restaurants like McDonald’s are limited. So, don’t be shy to explore rewarding roles that align with your skills and long-term goals!
- Changes to Post-Graduation Work Permits (PGWP)
Graduates must complete skilled programs in areas like Agriculture, Healthcare, STEM, Trade, or Transport in order to be eligible for PGWP. Additional requirements for PGWP now include language proficiency skills and graduation from an eligible field of study. Remember that you can still get student visas to pursue any courses, but can only work in Canada after graduation if you choose the PGWP-eligible courses.
What Should You Do?
- Plan Early: Start your application process 6 months ahead to avoid delays.
- Stay Informed: Keep track of updates to visa and work permit policies.
- Be Patient: While processing might take longer without SDS, your visa will still be processed.
Canadian universities and communities offer incredible support for international students. With these updates, proper planning and proactive steps will set you on the path to success. Have questions about these changes or need help navigating the process? Reach out to Entri Fly today!
