If you’re planning to study abroad, the IELTS (International English Language Testing System) is often one of the first steps. At Entri Fly, we often hear students ask: “How are IELTS bands actually calculated?” Let’s make it simple.
The IELTS Test Structure
The IELTS exam is divided into four sections, each designed to test a specific language skill:
- Listening: You’ll hear 4 recorded audio clips (conversations, monologues, and discussions) and answer 40 questions.
- Reading: There are 3 reading passages with 40 questions. The passages differ depending on whether you take the Academic or General Training test.
- Writing: You complete 2 tasks.
Task 1: Describe/interpret data (Academic) or write a formal/informal letter (General).
Task 2: Write an essay in response to a problem, argument, or point of view.
Speaking: A face-to-face interview with an examiner, divided into 3 parts – an introduction and interview, a short speech on a topic, and a two-way discussion.
How Scoring Works
Each skill is marked individually on a band scale from 0 (non-user) to 9 (expert user).
- Listening & Reading: Based on the number of correct answers (out of 40), which are converted into band scores.
- Writing & Speaking: Graded by certified examiners using clear criteria such as grammar, vocabulary, fluency, and task response.
Your final Overall Band Score is the average of the four section scores. The average is then rounded to the nearest 0.5 or whole number: 25 is rounded up to .5, .75 is rounded up to the next whole number.
Example Calculation
Let’s say your section scores are:
- Listening: 6.5
- Reading: 7.0
- Writing: 6.0
- Speaking: 7.0
Total = (6.5 + 7.0 + 6.0 + 7.0) ÷ 4 = 6.625. This is rounded down to Band 6.5.
Why This Matters
- Most universities in the UK, Canada, Australia, and New Zealand require at least 6.0–6.5 overall.
- Some also ask for a minimum band in each section, not just the overall average.
- Knowing the format and scoring helps you prepare strategically. No surprises on test day!
